New research by the car rental comparison and booking website DiscoverCars.com found that Portugal, Spain and Austria are among the most affordable places for a family camping trip in Europe this summer.
To find the best budget-friendly getaway, DiscoverCars.com analysed 2-4 popular family campsites in each country in the survey to find the average lowest campsite cost for a week-long stay between 27th July-2nd August. They then combined this cost with car rental rates in the local area for the same time frame, finding a total average cost for a week-long trip.
Here are the top 5 most affordable destinations for a family camping trip
Portugal
In first place is Portugal, as campsite and car hire costs for a week came to just €363. DiscoverCars.com found that Portugal had the lowest car rental costs at €143 and the lowest average campsite costs came to €220, making it the most affordable family camping destination this summer.
Spain
In second place for the most affordable family camping destination is Spain, with an average cost of €398 for a week-long campsite stay including car rental fees. DiscoverCars.com found that Spain had the second most affordable campsite costs at €149, and the third least expensive car hire costs at €249.

Austria
Austria came in third place for most affordable family camping destination, with a total cost of €445 for a campsite stay and car rental fees. Austria was found to have the fourth most affordable campsite costs at €187 and car hire at €258, making the top three overall.
UK
The UK came in fourth place with a total combined cost of €504. The UK’s average campsite costs for a week-long stay came to €272, the second highest amount. The car rental costs came to €232, which was the second most affordable in the research.
Sweden
Sweden’s total average campsite and car rental cost came to €552, landing the destination in fifth place for most affordable family camping. Sweden’s campsite costs came to €200, and the car rental price was €352.
The five most expensive countries for a family camping trip this summer
DiscoverCars.com also found the countries that have a higher average cost to rent a car and for a week-long stay at a camping stay.
In first place is the Netherlands with an average cost of €1,021.
In second place is Switzerland with an average cost of €958.
In third place is Norway with an average cost of €776.
In fourth place is Finland with an average cost of €637.
In fifth place France with an average cost of €629.
